Hmm, mine were originally 808-8a with loading cap, 802 rear cover and have plenty of threads with the 5/8", so why would a longer one ever be needed?

You can't use the screws from drivers with loading caps with drivers without them as they will be too long at least with 802s & 902s
Hmm, you're talking about the diaphragm mounting screws whereas mah is asking about rear cover mounting screws, so 5/8" is fine and see no reason for any additional length, especially since it's a blind hole that's not going to be threaded all the way down. Really, on mine, a 1/2" screw is long enough to give more than the two full thread minimum, so would have no qualms about using this length either.
